What is Diatomaceous Earth
and How Does it Work?

Diatomaceous Earth is a natural occurring siliceous sedimentary mineral compound from microscopic skeletal remains of unicellular algae-like plants called diatoms. These plants have been part of the earth's ecology since prehistoric times.

Diatoms are basic to the oceanic cycle, and the food for minute animal life which in turn becomes the food for higher forms of marine life. As living plants, diatoms weave microscopic shells from the silica they extract from the water, then as they die, deposits are formed and then fossilized in what are now dried lake and ocean beds.

Diatomaceous Earth or DE is totally organic and safe. It is taken from fresh water deposits and is the purest form available. DE is mother nature's product with no harm to the environment, pets or to humans. Diatomaceous Earth is not actually an "earth" but it is the fossilized remains of microscopic shells created by one celled plants called DIATOMS.

It is safe to use indoors (around kitchen cupboards and pantries) as well as outdoors, along foundations and in the yard and garden. Diatomaceous earth is a non-toxic, safe substance made up from crushed fossils of freshwater organisms and marine life called Diatoms (a type of algae). It is 100% natural and mined from the ground.

The diatoms have a hard shell made of non-crystalline silica, which does not decompose in the lakes, or sea where diatoms live. Thus, over long periods of time, large volumes of fossilised diatoms are exposed on the surface from dried out lakes.

Crushed to a fine powder and observed through a microscope, the particles resemble bits of broken glass. Deadly to any insect but completely harmless to animals, fish, fowl or food.

Most insects have a waxy outer shell covering their bodies. Diatomaceous earth scratches through this shell causing the insect to dehydrate, leading to eventual death. Therefore, it controls insects by physical means rather than chemical, and thus has no chemical toxicity.

Diatomaceous earth once mined, is then ground and screened to various grades for the countless uses in today's products and processes, from toothpaste to cigars, plastics to paprika, filter media in swimming pools to home fish tanks as well as insect and parasite control in animals and grains.

Mineralization

If you began feeding Diatomaceous Earth to your poultry or livestock and noticed a gain in production, what could the gain be attributed to? The obvious answer would be that the Diatomaceous Earth reduced the parasite population resulting in decreased stress on the animal and increased food assimilation.

But what about the 'mineral' content of Diatom?

Diatomaceous Earth provides a broad spectrum of naturally occurring chelated minerals. These include potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphate, sodium, titanium and others. Numerous accounts of gain have been reported when adding Diatom to a ration. With the lack of mineralization in modern grains, it isn't hard to conceive of mineral benefits from a finely ground natural mineral product. Feeding at 2% of grain ration can take care of both de-worming and mineralization. Most livestock will acquire a 'taste' for the mineral if a small amount is mixed in with other feed. After acquiring a taste for Diatom, they may take it free-choice.

Diatomaceous Earth is a natural (not calcined or flux calcined) compound with many elements which include:

Silicon Dioxide (SiO2) - 83.7%,
Aluminium Oxide (A12O3) - 5.6%,
Iron Oxide (Fe2O3) - 2.3%
Calcium Oxide (CaO) - 0.4%,
Magnesium Oxide (MgO) - 0.3%,
Other Oxides - 1.9%.

Analysis of Other Elements:

Copper - 2ppm, Strontium - 100ppm, Titanium - 1800ppm, Manganese - 200ppm.
Sodium - 2000ppm, Vanadium - 500ppm, Boron - 50ppm, Zirconium - 220ppm.

Physical Properties

Diatomaceous Earth has a unique combination of physical properties:

High Porosity:
Up to 85% of the volume of Diatom Powder is made up of tiny interconnected pores.
It is quite literally more air than Diatom.

High Absorption:
Diatom can generally absorb up to 1 times its own weight in liquid and still exhibit the properties of a dry powder.

High Surface Area/Particle Structure:
Diatom particles are characterized by their very irregular shapes, generally spiny structures and pitted surface area.

They average only 5 to 20 microns in diameter, yet have a surface area several times greater than any other mineral with the same particle size. Diatomaceous Earth increases bulk without adding very much weight. These features it is believed, are what make it an ideal mineral for internal parasite control in animals.

How It Works?

Diatomaceous Earth has been used in Asia to control insects for 400 years.

For Pets & Animals

Our best friends come in all shapes and sizes. Protect them with Diatomaceous Earth. When lightly rubbed into their coats or dusted on their premises, it is very effective against fleas, ticks, lice, and other pests on pet dogs, cats, and birds. It can also be used as an organic wormer and will kill any worms or parasites the pets may have.

When using as a de-wormer, mix the Diatomaceous Earth into their food as follows:

Large Cats - 1 teaspoon
Kittens - 1/4 teaspoon
Dogs 100 lbs + - 1-2 tablespoons
Dogs 50 - 100lbs - 1 tablespoon
Dogs Under 50 lbs - 1 teaspoon
Mini dogs - 1/2 teaspoon

As pets get older, they also get sore joints. With Diatomaceous Earth in their diet they will feel better. Apply to moist kennel areas to reduce odors, dry the area, and prevent pest breeding. Deodorizing and absorption are natural functions of DE, so add to kitty litter to absorb odors and keep the litter box drier.

All livestock
Horses, Cows, Pigs, Sheep, Goats, Rabbits, Chickens and others will benefit from the use of Diatomaceous Earth. It is completely safe and nontoxic.

Household Pests

Diatomaceous Earth is a natural, organic insect killer. Diatomaceous Earth kills by physical action and not by chemical so there is NO harm to pets or humans. The tiny hard and sharp diatoms scratch off the insects waxy coating, causing it to dehydrate. Use Diatomaceous Earth for control of roaches, silverfish, ants, fire ants, bedbugs, lice, mites, spiders, earwigs, flies, fleas, box elder bugs, crabs (std), Pubic and hair Lice, scorpions, crickets, and many other insects. Diatomaceous Earth can be used in and around the home, yard, animal housing, etc. Sprinkle a 2 inch wide border around the foundation of your house to prevent insects from entering.

Household Usages

Metal Cleaner:

Make a paste with Diatomaceous Earth and water to make a metal polish. Diatomaceous Earth also makes a very inexpensive soft scrub for the shower, sink and faucets.

Face Mask and Cleanser:

Mix Diatomaceous Earth and water together untill you have made a paste. Apply to the face with circular scrubbing motion untill face is fully covered. Leave on face for approx. 2 min. and then wash off with warm water. Your face will be fully exfoliated and toned for pennies!!! Mix Diatomaceous Earth with your favorite cleanser and you will have cleaner, smoother skin.

Teeth Cleaner:

Sprinkle a small amount on your favorite brand of toothpaste and brush as you normally would. You will notice that your teeth look and feel "Just went to the Dentist" Clean.
